RESOURCES AND ORGANIZATIONS
I will be adding a substantial list of resources and organizations here. In the meantime, if you are already teaching anti-racist lessons, I ask that you submit them to the Educators For AntiRacism database.
Soon, the database will be online sharing lessons from teachers all over the world doing this work, but they need teachers to submit!
In addition, if have not visited the Black Lives Matter webite I would begin there. The organization offers reading materials, teaching materials, and suggestions for taking action. Thanks so much!!
ORGANIZATIONS
ABOLITIONIST TEACHING NETWORK
Abolitionist Teaching Network's mission is simple: develop and support educators to fight injustice within their schools and communities. Utilizing the intellectual work and direct action of Abolitionists in many forms, including community organizers, educators, parents, social workers, counselors, lawyers, therapists, artists, health care providers, and incarcerated folx, we will organize and take action for educational freedom.
CENTER FOR EQUITY AND INCLUSION
Center for Equity and Inclusion (CEI) is a specialized consulting agency focused on advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts within organizations, education systems and communities. It was born out of the increasing racial and economic disparities experienced in our communities, the perceived lack of a systemic approach to addressing these disparities, and a growing idea about a holistic solution.
RETHINKING SCHOOLS
Rethinking Schools is a nonprofit publisher and advocacy organization dedicated to sustaining and strengthening public education through social justice teaching and education activism. Magazines, books, and other resources promote equity and racial justice in the classroom. They encourage grassroots efforts in our schools and communities to enhance the learning and well-being of our children and to build a broad democratic movement for social and environmental justice.
NORTHWEST CONFERENCE ON TEACHING SOCIAL JUSTICE
The organization’s mission is to offer the opportunity for participants to build social justice networks for people to share knowledge and resources. NWTSJ is dedicated to sustaining and strengthening public education through social justice teaching and education activism. NWTSJ workshops aim to provide resources that promote equity and racial justice in the classroom. Grassroots efforts are encouraged in schools and communities to enhance the learning and well-being of our children, and to build broad democratic movements for social and environmental justice.
THINK:KIDS COLLABORATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING
I believe that a major aspect of Abolitionist Teaching deals with the way teachers treat students and enforce discipline in the classroom. Countless studies, school reported data, and eyewitness accounts report teacher bias in the way sBIPOC students are seen and treated, whole schools dedicated to controlling behavior. Think:Kids' CPS approach offers more than just a different approach, in fact providing teachers with a whole new philosophy in how we see students. I believe that CPS works well with restorative justice models and teaches students and teachers to treat each other with empathy and humility.
