ALLIGNING WITH COMMON CORE STATE AND DISTRICT STANDARDS
One of the worries you might be having at this point probably have to do with standards and expectations.
Does Global Education and Abolitionist Teaching mean that you will need to ignore or circumvent expectations from your school, district, or state? Must I throw away all the assessments from all my years of teaching?
The answer to these questions is an absolute “NO.” I am not asking teachers to dodge expectations or rewrite their entire curriculum. Both these philosophies ask for a reimagining, but also melding, adapting, and aligning. I have discovered it is not much work to take a few moments to reflect on my teaching, making sure I know the purpose of each lesson, not taking for granted that I am creating a space that fosters global citizenship and anti-racist teaching, which means actively challenging traditional choices of texts and approaches to teaching. I have only included an example of aligning with global standards, but will add abolitionist teaching soon!
